Location and Setting The Badu Mangroves site is located in the heart of Sydney within Sydney Olympic Bicentennial Park, it's location within the park can be seen in fig. 1.1 It is part of the Badu Mangroves Wetlands on the Homebush Bay, with 40 hectares of parklands consisting of hills, lakeside meadows and green scenery.
History Prior to the 1990s, mangroves were considered to be irrelevant and insignificant ecosystems, however, through research in recent years has proved them to play key roles in marine and estuarine ecology. Specific to the Homebush area where the mangroves overtime because endangered due to pollution caused by people’s lack of knowledge of the importance of the ecosystem providing a habitat for various fauna species.
Due to how irrelevant they were considered to be, during the time pre-1990's, the Homebush Bay area was infested with industrial factories and chemical plants that obliterated the ecosystem. This resulted in the lasting complications and abnormalities within the ecosystem such as the non-degradable chemicals now found within the various organisms within the ecosystem, this led to the prohibiting of fishing within the area as the chemicals in the fish are harmful to the health of humans.
